Windows, windows, windows -- Glorious Windows!
This weekend we (let's be honest, it was mostly Cory) were able to get all the windows cut into the silo. There are 4 located somewhat close together to create a "picture window effect" to the East -- these are my favorite. They were placed very specifically to take full advantage of the Bridger Mountain view from the loft, especially for when they decide to show off. Being on the West side of the Bridger Mountains gives us the beautiful morning sunrises in addition to the soft pink alpenglow snow capped evenings.
The five rectangular windows up the stairs add a geometrical element to the exterior as well as the interior. These windows gave us an opportunity to add an incredible amount of light to the space, increasing the solar gain, while at the same time adding to the visual interest.
Please take note of the dome skylight at the very tippy top of the bin. We wanted to add something to highlight the loft area and really give it that special "wow" factor. The skylight adds light, brings the outside in (not literally.....hopefully!), offers a peek at the incredible night sky showcasing millions of stars, and somehow creates a spaciousness within.
If there has ever been a mistake we've made building our own homes, it has been skimping on the window package. We wanted to make sure we didn't have that feeling after we finished this build.
The tools used to complete the window install were many, due to the metal thickness increasing as you get lower on the bin. In the upper rings we were able to use the plasma cutter, grinder (many grinder wheels) & what actually worked the best was the nibbler. As we descended to the lower windows and the thickness grew we had to resort to the skill saw with the metal blade. The nibbler worked for awhile there too, until the head popped off -- both nibblers.
During the window install Colt & Destri took it upon themselves to clean the inside of the silo and tidy up the exterior of the jobsite as well. Destri scraped and vacuumed while Colt made endless trips to the burn pile.
If you don't know yet, pop-in's are probably --by far-- one of my most favorite things in the WHOLE world! I think this comes from growing up in the middle of nowhere & social interaction being very limited. We were blessed by Cory's family coming to see us amidst our window install. It was a very welcome interruption & gave us the opportunity to give scratches to all the sweet animals who wanted them! **Addi even got to put the first ride on Dodge**
Next we get to stain the interior doors & trim, install upstairs flooring and patiently await the cabinets arrival. Cory plans to build the bathroom vanity, floating shelves in the kitchen, bar top, and the stair treads. Plenty of things to keep us busy nights & weekends for the next couple weeks!
